What is a connection request?

A connection request is an invitation that you can send or receive to be part of someone’s “associates” or for them to be part of yours. They are common on social media platforms, with LinkedIn being the main platform using connection requests.

What is a LinkedIn Connection Request?

If you have checked out LinkedIn, you have probably come across the words ‘connection’ and ‘LinkedIn connection request. You might be asking yourself a question: What is a connection request? The answer is quite simple: It is an invitation to anyone on the LinkedIn platform to become part of your network. If that doesn't make it clear to you, we might need to back up a bit and explain what a LinkedIn connection is. Here we go.

What is a LinkedIn Connection?

A LinkedIn connection is typically described as a member of the LinkedIn social media platform that trusts you and who you mutually trust as well. People that are connected on the platform can view each other’s posts on their homepages and text each other. A LinkedIn connection is the equivalent of a "friend" on Facebook.

To be able to get someone to be your connection, they have to first consent to it. That's where a LinkedIn connection request comes in. Connections are essential, especially if you are looking into getting B2B leads. I

f you ask yourself what online B2B leads are and why you might need them, here is a simple answer: They are your potential clients and sources of your potential profit.

How to Send a Connection Request?

Knowing how to send a connection request is important. Some people tend to treat this as a minor skill. But anyone who has been on LinkedIn will tell you that sending the actual connection request is a tenth of the work; preparing for it is something different. How do you go around it? Here is the complete how to send a connection request guide.

Click on the Connections Tab

We will be talking about the best way to choose some of the most suitable connections available on the LinkedIn platform. But, first, you have to know how to send the connection request when you finally find them. Once you have come across a “user” who, as you feel, would make a perfect connection, one thing you will need to do is to click on their picture, and it will lead you to their profile. On the profile page, there is a “Connect” tab - click on it. It is the first step in sending the connection request. Once you click, you are about to see a pop-up. This is where the real work begins.

How to Write a Connection Request

If you feel that you have already built a strong connection with someone outside the platform, that is the potential connection. If you have met on another platform, you can send the LinkedIn connection invitation message.

If you are trying to build a connection from scratch on the platform, the LinkedIn “blanket” invitation will not do the trick. It will not work at all. You have to learn how to write a connection request. Such knowledge will help you ensure that when someone receives your connection request, they will be already furnished with all the necessary information about you.

The LinkedIn connection message is, let us just say, a “spam-bound” message. The message reads something like this, “I would like to be in your network.” If you have been on LinkedIn, you can agree with us that the only thing that type of text evokes is the desire to keep silent and ignore the request.

Writing a Perfect Connection Request

How do you write a perfect connection request text? Well, it is quite simple. For beginners, the most important thing is an introduction. Your potential connection has already known who you are from your profile details, so you have to keep it brief in your connection request. It means that you can just introduce yourself either with your first name or your professional title with your surname as a suffix. Keep it very short. For example, “Hi, I am Mr. X” will work perfectly well. It is a long enough introduction. We only have 300 characters, and we do not want to waste them on something available on your profile. It makes knowing how to write a connection request more important.

The next part of the invitation request message should make it clear that you would like to connect with the person. Add a brief reason to make sure they understand why you think they would make a great connection. If you are new in the business field, you can always say you intend to learn from them since they are industry experts. It puts the potential connection on a pedestal and motivates another reason to accept your connection request. Work on it!

The last part is also essential. If you have signaled your intention to become their connection, you can always add where you heard about them or where you met them. It is important because it adds context to your connection invitation. If you met them at an event, you have to mention it. If you met them during your research, tell them (research is quite a desirable characteristic on the platform, it is another plus). Remember, you only have 300 characters at your disposal - you do not want to waste them. Make sure that this part is concise and fits well as a conclusion.

The Connection Requests Don’ts

There are several things that you should not include in your connection request message. If you include the elements written on the following list, chances are you will struggle to get confirmations from most people that you want to connect with on the platform.

Job Requests

The first and most important connection request anomaly is a job request. As tempting as it may seem to directly file your petition for your job to the person you believe might just give it to you, your invitation request message is just not the place to do it. Remember, chances are the person you are sending your connection request does not know you. And an immediate job request might just turn them off. There is going to be a lot of time for job requests once they become your connection on the platform. Be patient, just stick to the template, and don’t ask for a job in your connection request.

It can be quite tempting to highlight your impressive qualifications to your potential connection. Please do not do it. Your profile is filled with your skills and achievements. Once you are connected, they can check it out on your profile. If you want your qualifications to help you stand out, make sure that they are clearly labeled on the qualifications section of your profile. We also know that your achievements are too good to be compressed in a 300-character message.

Contact Details

Yes, there have been several cases where people have shared their contact details with LinkedIn users that they were not familiar with. In both cases, it didn’t end well. For security reasons, we urge you not to share your contact information in your connection request message. The internet is full of scammers, LinkedIn included. Just go with the given template, and we guarantee that it will work fine.

Use a Template

If you feel that the steps highlighted in this article are a bit of work, you can always go with pre-written connection request message templates available online. These templates are already complete. All you have to do is add in your name. For some of them, though, you will need to part with several dollars. If you want to go down that road, it is ok, we recommend it. Make sure that you avoid dodgy websites, though.

How to Cancel Connection Requests?

Once in a while, you might want to cancel a connection request for whatever reason. LinkedIn allows you to do that. The first step is to go to the “My Network” section, which is available on your profile. Once you are on that page, click the connections tab. In the connections tab area, there is a “manage connections” option - click there. After that, select the “Sent” tab. Under this section, you will see all the connection requests you have sent. Choose the ones you want to cancel and select the withdraw option.

Now you know how to cancel connection requests.

Getting connections on LinkedIn is quite easy. If you follow these steps, you are never going to struggle to get a connection. It is essential, though, that you make sure you read the website’s connections policy. It is even more important that you adhere to the connection request policy.
